Press Release
Westminster College is pleased to announce that we have offered for sale an important collection of manuscript fragments to the two university libraries at Oxford and Cambridge to acquire jointly for their public collections, and a sale has been agreed.
The fragments are all from the Cairo Genizah and date from the 9th century onwards. They were given to the college by Agnes Lewis and Margaret Gibson, the twin sisters whose story has now been made famous by Janet Soskice's book Sisters of Sinai (2009). The twins were major benefactors of the college at the time of its founding in Cambridge in 1899.
The fragments have been well cared for at Westminster College, but the college does not have the facilities or the resources properly to conserve, research or make accessible these very precious manuscripts. Initial discussions with the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Centre at Cambridge University Library therefore began two years ago. This outcome will reunite the separate collections, which were the result of rival activities a century ago.
The Governors of the College have always been committed to keeping the collection together and to securing for it the best possible location and ownership. This joint collaboration between the libraries of Cambridge and Oxford provides the ideal solution.
This sale will contribute towards the costs of enabling the re-development of Westminster College to serve today's church, just as the sisters in their day contributed towards the foundation of the college in Cambridge.
£7 million refurbishment
We're starting! Through our £7 Million Appeal Campaign we have successfully managed to raise enough money to make a start on the College refurbishment.
Having raised enough money to make a start and with full support from the United Reformed Church, we’ll be starting the re-development programme in mid- June 2013. For twelve months, builders will be on site working hard to transform our beautiful and historic building into a Resource Centre for Learning which we can continue to be proud of. While some of our activity can continue, we hope you will understand if – for that one year – we cannot offer all the services and support that you might normally expect from us.
After that we hope to embrace and celebrate what will be the biggest change to the college’s life since it was built in 1899, and look forward to a better future of service, study and hospitality.
Westminster will become a place of art and music as well as books; a place of prayer and quiet as well as lively discussion. We shall welcome a much greater variety of people and groups: for short stays as well as long courses, for prayer and reflection as much as study, for meeting and conversation as much as for learning.
The work means that we won’t be able to host an Open Day in 2013 but will, instead, introduce our dynamic and transformed building to you on in October 2014. In the meantime;
- Look out for our Building Blog (we’ll be announcing details soon)
- Be aware that the changes have already started– we’ll be changing our phone numbers very soon, with details announced on our website.
- Put our Open Day on Saturday 25th October 2014 into your diary
To those who have given, encouraged and prayed for us, thank you. To those who will come to Westminster to meet, worship and learn, we look forward warmly to making you welcome.
