Biblical Hebrew Winter School
Biblical Hebrew Winter School (BHWS)
at Westminster College, Cambridge
3rd – 12th Jan 2024
Come and learn beginners’ Biblical Hebrew in Cambridge, including 24 hours of class time with experienced tutors and 24 hours of guided independent study.
There are two choices of pace and goal:
Track 1: Academic Intensive.
For those who are currently studying at BA level or above, or already know a Semitic language, and would like to learn Biblical Hebrew intensively from scratch for academic purposes. This will take you from learning the alphabet, through to translating some basic biblical texts.
Tutor: Dr Marieke Dhont
Dr Marieke Dhont is a Teaching Associate for the Foundation Year and Affiliated Lecturer at the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge. She has a joint PhD in Religious Studies and Theology from KU Leuven and UC Louvain.
She holds a specialised teaching qualification in ancient languages from KU Leuven and has been teaching Biblical Hebrew at Cambridge since 2018.
Track 2: Hebrew for Faith and Fun!
For those who are interested in learning the basics of Biblical Hebrew from a faith perspective or who would enjoy learning at a slower, more accessible pace. You will learn the alphabet, how to read Biblical Hebrew, names of God in the Bible, Hebrew songs and prayers, and the value of understanding Hebrew for biblical interpretation and translation.
Tutor: Dr Alison Gray
Dr Alison Gray is the Director of Studies at Westminster College, Cambridge, and teaches Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Studies for the Cambridge Theological Federation. She has a PhD in Theology (Hebrew Bible) and has been teaching Biblical Hebrew to Cambridge undergraduates since 2006 and has been an Affiliated Lecturer at the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge since 2016.
