Westminster and Windermere: Exploring Advent Retreat, 14-16th December

adventWe’re delighted to share that Neil Thorogood and Sam White will be travelling up to The Windermere Centre to lead the centre’s annual Advent retreat from 14th to 16th December.

We’re looking forward to delving into the Advent narrative through art and story-telling. You will have opportunities to reflect on Bible texts generating words and images to tell the story. Join us in a beautiful part of the world for friendship, worship and good food.

This is part of our on-going partnership in which The Windermere Centre deliver courses at Westminster and Westminster reciprocate.  As such, this event is being run on a Pay What You Can basis and rather than contacting Westminster to book, please visit The Windermere Centre website and explore the programme in more detail.

Westminster College commissions Dr Alison Gray

On the evening of Wednesday 2nd November the college community met together in chapel to welcome Dr Alison Gray as Director of Old Testament language, literature and theology. In a worship service led by Mr Alan Yates, United Reformed Church Moderator of General Assembly, Alison was affirmed and commissioned to the work she’s undertaking within the college, Cambridge Theological Federation, the University of Cambridge and the wider denomination. Alison is an experienced teacher and during the service she spoke movingly of her love for the Hebrew bible, for illuminating the scriptures, and of her continued desire to share new ways of exploring the richness of the Old Testament in developing the Christian faith.

Following a buffet reception enjoyed by Alison, her family members, close friends, colleagues and students, she said,

I feel honoured to be the first lay tutor to be appointed here, and am looking forward to the breadth of opportunities to serve the wider church as well as to attend to the work of formational training for ministry within the college. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be supported by friends and family and to have received such a warm welcome from the Westminster community.

Wow look at this!

Only a week after our last post, we can see the shell being built. The roof is on and the walls are coming up, this really is creating a huge buzz in our Community.

See you next week for another dramatic change…

The foundations are finally in….

Indeed the project is going very well. All very exciting to see now the floor print and how the studio is going to fit nicely next to the Prayer Labyrinth; and eventually into our community life.

More to follow…

Art Studio coming…

We’re very excited to share the following pictures, which show our Art Studio in progress. Whilst there isn’t much to see right now, the contractors have been setting up site and preparing the ground to lay foundations so lots of digging out and muck away going on at the moment. The site temporarily takes up some of the area of the Prayer Labyrinth but don’t worry, it is staying put and will be looked after carefully.

The work is scheduled to take 10 weeks so by Christmas we hope to take you on a tour inside!

In the Company Of

Recently Philip Dazeley, who has many years of experience as a lay preacher, spent the week in college as part of Westminster’s In the Company of scheme. He had the opportunity to be part of the college community, eating and worshiping with staff and students, as well as having dedicated time with academic staff to focus his study on particular areas of interest. During the week he also spent time exploring Cambridge city centre.

Below are some of Philip’s reflections on his stay. If you’d like to set up your own unique ‘In the Company Of…’ experience, please contact Syd or Claudia in the Tutorial Office on 01223 33 06 49 or on admin@westminster.cam.ac.uk.
