Diploma in Higher Education in Theology, Ministry, and Mission

The Diploma in Higher Education in Theology, Ministry, and Mission offers an opportunity to study Christian theology and its application to everyday spirituality within a supportive community. Validated by the University of Durham as part of the Common Awards suite of degrees, this program is traditionally considered the entry-level qualification for most ecclesiastical and lay positions, such as chaplaincy. It is also suitable for those pursuing their first undergraduate degree, regardless of age.


Programme Structure

  • Students select any mix of Level 4 & level 5 modules up to the value of 240 credits, in accordance with the module choice guidelines below.
  • Two years full-time (typically two modules per term)
  • Three to five years part-time (typically one module per term, or less)

Module Choice Guidelines

120 credits at Level 4:

  • At least 20 credits from each of these categories:
    • Biblical Studies
    • Christian Tradition
    • Ministry and Mission
  • At least 10 credits from the category:
    • Theological Reflection and Reflective Practice

120 Credits at Level 5:

  • At least 20 credits from each of these categories:
    • Biblical Studies
    • Christian Tradition
    • Ministry and Mission
  • At least 10 credits from the category:
    • Theological Reflection and Reflective Practice

Module Teaching

All modules are taught by our experienced teaching staff or colleagues from the wider Cambridge Theological Federation, creating a dynamic and ecumenical learning environment. Class sizes typically range from 5 to 25 students, fostering rich discussions and a diverse learning experience. Face-to-face sessions combine lectures, seminars, and small group work, while independent study sessions often involve engaging with multimedia resources followed by reflective exercises.


Progression

The modular structure of the Common Awards allows students to progress through various levels of academic achievement, from a Foundation Award to a Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor of Arts (Honours), and even postgraduate study. This flexible progression pathway enables students to start with the Diploma and decide whether to advance to higher levels of study.


Cost and Financial Aid

The cost of the Diploma is £12,000. Bursaries are available, and the program is registered for Student Finance (England).
